How to start playing golf on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol has so many golf courses that it is often nicknamed the “Costa del Golf”. For people who live here, that means good weather for playing most of the year and plenty of places to learn. But if you have never held a club, the world of handicaps, licences and dress codes can feel closed. This guide explains how to get started step by step, without spending a fortune before you know if you like it.

If you are looking for an overview of courses in the area, read our article on golf on the Costa del Sol: courses and tips for newcomers. This guide focuses on how to start as a beginner.

Why the Costa del Sol suits beginners

  • Choice of courses: from Málaga to Sotogrande there are courses of every level, from demanding championship courses to shorter, easier ones.
  • Practice facilities: many clubs have a driving range, putting green and short-game area that you can use without playing a full round.
  • Pitch & putt: short courses with very short holes are a cheap and relaxed way to learn. Pitch & putt is organised within the Andalusian golf federation.
  • International community: lessons are widely available in English and other languages, and many clubs have social groups for newcomers.

Step 1: take lessons first

The best start is a few lessons with a golf professional. Almost every club or golf academy on the coast has teaching pros. A good teacher stops you building bad habits that are hard to fix later.

  • Group or beginner courses: many clubs run introduction courses over several sessions. This is usually the cheapest way to learn the basics and meet other beginners.
  • Private lessons: more expensive, but faster progress. Ask if the club lends you clubs during the first lessons.
  • Range practice: between lessons, buy a bucket of balls at the driving range and practise what you have learnt.
  • Children: many clubs have junior academies. Ask your nearest club what they offer.

Prices vary a lot between clubs and seasons, so compare a few places near you. Ask what is included: balls, club hire, use of the practice area and whether a federation licence is needed.

Step 2: the federation licence

In Spain, golfers who play regularly normally hold a licence from the Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG), the Spanish golf federation. In Andalusia, the Real Federación Andaluza de Golf manages golf at regional level, including handicaps and pitch & putt.

  • How to get it: you usually apply through a golf club. Ask at reception or the members’ office.
  • Insurance: the licence includes accident insurance for golf played at federated clubs.
  • Handicap: the licence is linked to your official handicap record.
  • Validity: the licence runs for a calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December.

Ask your club for the current price, as it depends on your age and which club issues it. If you already have a licence and handicap from another country, ask the course whether they accept it.

Step 3: getting a handicap

Your handicap shows your level and lets players of different ability compete fairly. Spain uses the World Handicap System, which is used across most of the golfing world. The highest Handicap Index under this system is 54.0, so even a complete beginner can get one.

  • You get your first Handicap Index by handing in a minimum number of scorecards from rounds played under the rules. Your club will tell you how many and how to submit them.
  • Many courses on the coast ask to see a handicap certificate before you can book a round, and some set a maximum handicap.
  • Until you have a handicap, practice areas, pitch & putt and some shorter courses are the easiest places to play.

Etiquette and dress code on the course

Golf has its own manners, and other players notice quickly if you do not know them. The basics:

  • Keep up the pace: stay close to the group in front. If you are slower than the group behind, let them play through.
  • Look after the course: replace divots, repair pitch marks on the green and rake bunkers after you play out of them.
  • Safety: never hit when someone could be in range. Shout “fore” if your ball is heading towards other people.
  • Quiet: stand still and stay quiet while others play their shot. Keep your phone on silent.
  • Dress code: most clubs require golf clothing, such as a shirt with a collar and tailored trousers or shorts, and soft-spike golf shoes. Jeans, sports vests and football shirts are often not allowed. Check each club’s rules before you go.

Equipment: start small

You do not need a full set of new clubs to start. A half set with a few irons, a wood or hybrid and a putter is enough for the first months. Many clubs hire out clubs, and second-hand sets are easy to find on the coast, where many players upgrade or move away.

  • Shoes: proper golf shoes give grip and protect the greens.
  • Clothes: a few breathable polo shirts and a light layer for cool winter mornings. Sports brands such as adidas (ad) have golf ranges with shoes and clothing.
  • Advertisementadidas (ad)
  • Sun protection: a cap, sunscreen and water, even in winter.

Golf is also a good way to meet people. If you want to try other sports too, see the biggest sports in Spain and how to get involved or our guide to getting started with padel.

FAQ: golf for beginners on the Costa del Sol

Do I need a licence to play golf in Spain?

For lessons and the practice range you usually do not. To play rounds on most courses and get a handicap, a federation licence is normally expected. Ask the club, which can also issue it.

Can I play on a course without a handicap?

Some courses accept players without a handicap, but many ask for a certificate when you book. Pitch & putt and shorter courses are usually more open to beginners.

What is the highest handicap I can have?

Under the World Handicap System, which Spain uses, the maximum Handicap Index is 54.0.

Is the licence valid for a full year?

The licence runs for a calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December, so it can be worth waiting until January if you start late in the year. Check with your club.
